Abstract:
The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is the world's largest single-dish antenna. Motivated by the Arecibo desgin, the FAST surpasses, in terms of raw sensitivity, all previous radio telescopes in the same band. The particular focus of this talk is on the so-called CRAFTS program, which is the world's first commensal survey of pulsars, HI imaging, HI galaxies, and FRBs, made possible by our novel high-cadence CAL technique. CRAFTS has discovered more than 150 pulsars and 6 fast radio bursts (FRB). Publication quality HI images are being produced. In conjuntion with dedicated PI programs, CRAFTS starts to chanllenge conventional views of pulsars spins, interstellar magnetic fields, the FRB event rates and its origins, etc. In 10 years, CRAFTS aspire to discover ~1000 pulsars, half a million galaxies, and to obtain 10 billion voxels in HI images.
 

 

 

Speaker:
Dr. Di Li, Chief Scientist of FAST Project and Radio Astronomy Division of NAO, China. He got his PhD at Cornell University in 2002 and worked for Harvard, JPL/CIT before joined NAO in 2012. He was awarded the Distinguished Young Fellowship by NSFC in 2017. He is PI’s of very important projects, including Major Platform for Innovation(2022,CAS), Basic Science Center(2020,NSFC), National Key R&D Program of China(2017, MOST). He has led the FAST team to achieve many discoveries including the first new pulsar, the first new FRB and the largest FRB pulse set ever published.
