隨著能量的增大宇宙射線質(zhì)量的測(cè)量越來(lái)越困難?!叭彰篮献魅槟z實(shí)驗(yàn)”(JACEE)的聯(lián)合高空氣球?qū)嶒?yàn)結(jié)果,提供了能量高達(dá)1015eV的有價(jià)值的重要資料。這項(xiàng)實(shí)驗(yàn)是在高空氣球浮升到含量不到0.5%的大氣頂層進(jìn)行的。得到的結(jié)論是,雖然大氣效應(yīng)仍待改正,這里能不受影響地在大氣中觀測(cè)到宇宙射線。JACEE實(shí)驗(yàn)是由日本、美國(guó)和波蘭研究人員協(xié)作進(jìn)行的,一系列的長(zhǎng)期氣球飛行已經(jīng)積累了大量數(shù)據(jù)?;緦?shí)驗(yàn)由探測(cè)宇宙射線、測(cè)定其電荷和能量等幾項(xiàng)工作組成。由于能夠進(jìn)行研究的能量范圍寬,所以這些測(cè)量特別重要。因?yàn)樘綔y(cè)系統(tǒng)非常龐大,探測(cè)器能在多次飛行中反復(fù)利用,所以觀測(cè)的時(shí)間也很長(zhǎng)。實(shí)驗(yàn)采用大面積和長(zhǎng)時(shí)間就意味著,宇宙射線粒子雖然稀少,卻可以探測(cè)到相當(dāng)數(shù)量的高能宇宙射線。
